Campaign Story
Ethandweni Children’s Home accommodates up to 48 children on its 16-hectare communal land premises in White Water, Matopo area, Zimbabwe. There are 4 gender-appropriate units, each of which is under the loving care and guidance of one supportive ‘Mother’ (called ‘Mothers’ because of the close relationship they have with the children). All bedrooms are fully equipped to create a warm, safe, and secure environment for our children.
Often, the children arrive at Ethandweni malnourished, sick and traumatised. As such, nutritional health and well-being is a top priority. Children are given 3 well-balanced meals that are prepared in the central kitchen. The general health of the children is monitored through regular check-ups and if more in-depth treatment is required, the child is taken to Bulawayo for further treatment.
With children from new-born to 18 years old, a special focus is placed on education, giving every child a chance to excel in school. The children attend local primary and secondary schools which provides them both with a seamless transition and ensures excessive travel is kept to an absolute minimum.
The support extends beyond the physical and appropriate emphasis is placed on a child’s emotional and psychological well-being. Most of the children have been afflicted by some form of trauma and ongoing counselling from caring Mothers helps to rebuild and reinforce the character of each individual child. The Mothers provide each child with the space to work through their challenges in a safe and confidential environment.
Spiritual development is provided as part of a holistic approach to the upbringing of the children.
